The author of this popular science work is Academician Alexander Alfonsonovich Grossheim, an outstanding botanist. The name of A. A. Grossheim, as a researcher of the plant world of the Caucasus, enjoys wide and well-deserved recognition both in our country and abroad. He devoted virtually his entire life to the study of Caucasian vegetation. Grossheim’s works contain valuable scientific information on the flora of almost all regions of the Caucasus, but he dedicated particular attention to Talysh, a remarkable borderland region distinguished by its extraordinary forests, which harbor numerous relict plant species. Some of these ancient species have survived nowhere else on Earth except in these localities. The flora of Talysh always deeply fascinated A. A. Grossheim, and this corner of the Caucasus held special significance for him. During his almost annual journeys through the Caucasus, he frequently visited his beloved Talysh, each time returning with abundant scientific material and fresh impressions. In this book, the author introduces readers to the unique plant world of his cherished Talysh through vivid travel narratives. The entire work is permeated with a love of nature and a genuine interest in the people he encountered on his journeys, whom he was able to engage in the scientific objectives of his expeditions. Considerable attention is devoted to the living conditions of the expedition and to the circumstances under which research on plant life is typically conducted. The hardships and unexpected incidents of travel, as well as the continuous and sometimes strenuous work, never diverted either the author or his companions from their intended course. The techniques of plant collecting and the rich, colorful, and fascinating life of the expedition are described in a vivid yet simple manner. Both younger and older readers will read this small book with interest and benefit. It reveals the appeal of a botanist’s fieldwork and inspires a love for the world of plants.
