The book summarizes the biological and chemical characteristics of medicinal plants growing in Turkmenistan and discusses their applications in both scientific and folk medicine. It is intended not only for medical specialists and pharmacologists but also for a wide readership. The flora of Turkmenistan is extraordinarily rich and has served as an inexhaustible source of remedies for various diseases for thousands of years. The ancient science of understanding the mysteries of water, land, air, and plants was created by our ancestors. For them, knowledge of the useful properties of the surrounding world was not merely a benefit, but at times the only means of survival. A powerful instinct for life and accumulated experience enabled them, long before they understood the chemical composition of plants, to identify the medicinal herbs they needed and determine which natural foods were safe to eat. As time passed, new medicinal plants continued to be discovered, and the “pharmacy” of our ancestors was enriched with new plant-derived remedies. “Medicine is the art of imitating nature's healing action,” wrote the renowned ancient physician Hippocrates. The outstanding Eastern scholar Abu Ali Ibn Sina, known in Europe as Avicenna, also championed this idea and made immense contributions to the history of medicine. His Canon of Medicine served for centuries as an indispensable reference work not only for physicians in the East but also for those in Europe, exerting a profound influence on the development of world medicine. It is the sacred duty of our generation to study the lives, professional achievements, and scientific legacy of those great figures who are no longer with us but who laid the foundations of Turkmen medical heritage. Our national heritage is eternal; it has existed for centuries, and its light continues to shine today. Among the sources concerning the history of medicinal-plant research, the classical works of Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, Sayyid Ismail Gurgani (Jorjani), Muhammad Gaymaz Turkmen, and Muhammad Husayn, celebrated physicians and scholars who lived on Turkmen soil, are of particular value. In modern medicine, medicinal plants have not lost their significance. On the contrary, they have attracted ever-increasing attention from scientists. The achievements of contemporary science make it possible not only to broaden the range of applications of already known medicinal plants but also to introduce a growing number of new species into healthcare practice. After examining the customs, traditions, and methods of preparing medicinal plants in folk medicine, practices that our ancestors elevated to the status of a national treasure of the Turkmen people, and drawing upon experience from modern world medicine related to medicinal plants, I have sought in this work to explain medicines and their therapeutic properties to the people of Turkmenistan on the basis of scientific knowledge accumulated from antiquity to the present day. During the great years of independence, truly broad opportunities have emerged for the comprehensive and reliable study of medicinal plants used in Turkmen folk medicine. However, it must be remembered that the scientific value and practical significance of medicinal plants depend on their application in traditional medicine. Therefore, I consider the thorough study and implementation of this task to be an urgent priority. The time has come to include the medicinal plants of Turkmenistan's flora in the national pharmacopoeia. In our country, the protection of public health is closely linked to measures aimed at preserving and improving the surrounding natural environment. Humanity receives everything necessary for life from nature, beginning with the air we breathe, water, and sunlight. The natural environment of Turkmenistan is exceptionally rich and supports an abundance of medicinal plants. Modern medical practice is unimaginable without plant-derived medicines or pharmaceutical preparations made from botanical raw materials. The principal purpose of this book is to expand the knowledge of healthcare workers, collectors and custodians of medicinal plant materials, and others involved with plants regarding their structure, habitats, characteristics, chemical composition, growth conditions, practical medical applications, methods and timing of collection, storage regulations, and ecological significance.
