This book is a comprehensive monograph on the physical-geographical regionalization of the Soviet Union. It systematically expounds the theoretical foundations, principles, and methods of physical-geographical regionalization and provides a detailed regional description of the European part of the USSR, namely the East European Plain. The volume begins with a review of the historical experience of physical-geographical regionalization studies in Russia and the Soviet Union, defining the principles of regionalization, the hierarchy of regional units, and the criteria used for delineating boundaries. It then presents a comprehensive overview of the “Eastern European Country” as a geographical entity, examining its geographical location, geological structure, relief features, climate, hydrology, soils, vegetation, fauna, and nature reserves. Building upon this general framework, the book proceeds to analyze the major natural zones, including the polar desert zone, tundra, forest-tundra, forest, forest-steppe, and steppe. These zones are further subdivided into landscape provinces and subregions, each of which is described in terms of its natural characteristics and regional distinctions. Clearly organized and systematically structured, the work is a representative example of regional physical-geographical regionalization studies.
