This book is a textbook that systematically presents the fundamental theories and practical applications of soil science. Its contents cover the basics of geology and geomorphology, the origin and evolution of soils, their composition and properties, classification and geographical distribution, as well as the genesis and agricultural utilization of typical soil types found in various natural zones. The book is divided into three major parts: Part I introduces the structure of the Earth's crust, weathering processes, and the classification of landforms. Part II provides a systematic discussion of soil-forming factors, soil organic matter, mechanical composition, physicochemical properties, soil colloids and absorption capacity, soil solutions, and the concept of soil fertility. Part III describes, according to major natural zones (including tundra, taiga, forest-steppe, steppe, semi-desert, desert, subtropical, and mountainous regions), the processes of soil formation, patterns of distribution, and agricultural evaluation of various soil types. It also contains specialized chapters on marsh soils, saline soils, floodplain soils, soil erosion and conservation measures, as well as methods of soil mapping and land evaluation. Each chapter is supplemented with laboratory assignments, practical exercises, and review questions. The book is intended for students of soil science and related disciplines at agricultural institutions of higher education, as well as for professionals engaged in agricultural work.
