The book The Development of Soviet Central Asia and Kazakhstan, authored by Zhang Baoguo, Associate Research Fellow at the Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences, is the first monograph published since the founding of the People's Republic of China to examine the history of economic development and construction in Soviet Central Asia and Kazakhstan. Its publication is of considerable significance for enhancing understanding among the people of Xinjiang and China as a whole of Central Asia and Kazakhstan, particularly with regard to the experiences and lessons associated with developing national economies and carrying out socialist construction in these regions. The Development of Soviet Central Asia and Kazakhstan provides a comprehensive account of the modern economic and social development of Soviet Central Asia and Kazakhstan. The author presents an integrated analysis of the nationalities, social, economic, and cultural policies implemented by the Soviet Party and government in these regions, and offers a detailed examination of Soviet economic development strategies and specific policies adopted during different historical periods. The book identifies both the achievements and shortcomings of Soviet practice in these fields, many of which offer valuable lessons for the development and economic construction of Xinjiang and the broader northwestern region of China. In preparing this work, Zhang Baoguo devoted tremendous effort and dedication. His decision to redirect his research toward topics serving practical needs and contributing to the development and construction of the autonomous region is particularly commendable. Employing the methods of dialectical materialism and historical materialism, he analyzes the various aspects of Central Asia and Kazakhstan from both historical and socio-economic perspectives. The work explores many issues in considerable breadth and examines certain questions with notable depth and originality. As a result, the book possesses substantial scholarly value.
