%X This book is a specialized work on the hydrological geography of Soviet rivers, discussing the subject against the background of natural geographical conditions. It was compiled collectively by the Soviet scholar V. E. Yogantsev and his colleagues.In addition to the preface, the book is divided into three parts:Part One, “General Survey of Soviet Hydrology,” first outlines the development of hydrological research in the Soviet Union and then discusses the general characteristics of Soviet rivers, the water cycle in the USSR, water balance and river feeding sources, the relationship between river runoff and natural geographical factors, the annual and seasonal distribution of runoff, river sediment, and the hydrochemical characteristics of river water.Part Two, “Hydrogeographical Regions,” divides the entire Soviet Union into twelve hydrogeographical regions. It examines in sequence the river systems of each region, the basic natural geographical factors associated with them, and the principal characteristics of their economic development.Part Three, “The Transformation of Soviet Hydrogeography and River Regimes,” describes the utilization of rivers and the history of their development, and explains the major issues relating to hydraulic engineering and water conservancy.
