AB  - The problem of protecting nature from the growing impact of human economic activity has comprehensive and global significance. The accelerating concentration of industrial production and the urbanization accompanying it, the intensification of agricultural production together with the corresponding increase in the manufacture and use of various pesticides, and the ever-expanding synthesis of new chemical compounds required for scientific and technological progress, all these and many other processes lead to the contamination of soil, water, and the atmosphere by substances harmful to human health. Information on pollutants is extremely extensive, but it is scattered across specialized, departmental, and industrial publications, lacks systematic organization, and is often fragmented and difficult to access.The publication of a bibliographic work capable of providing necessary reference information for the broad community of practitioners and researchers engaged in environmental protection issues has become an urgent necessity.The Library of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR has begun preparing and publishing such a reference tool. This bibliographic index is the first volume, and it is planned that subsequent volumes will be issued at least once a year.The index includes literature concerning substances of anthropogenic origin that pollute soil, water, and the atmosphere, as well as publications dealing with their toxicity, harmful effects, sources of entry into the environment and environmental concentrations, physicochemical and hygienic characteristics, indicators, maximum permissible concentrations, pathways of migration and transformation within the biosphere, and their effects on living organisms and ecosystems.The materials are systematically organized according to a classification scheme specially developed for this reference work, while entries within each section are arranged alphabetically.The first section contains literature on general problems of envi
