%X Atlas of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic was the first comprehensive scientific reference atlas of Kazakhstan. Its compilation was undertaken following a proposal by the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR and pursuant to a resolution approved by the Council of Ministers of the Republic. Through a systematic cartographic presentation, the atlas summarizes the results of many years of research conducted by the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan and by specialized scientific organizations on the republic's natural conditions and natural resources, population, economy, and history. Its purpose is to provide a scientific basis for the rational utilization of natural resources, the development of productive forces, and the planning of cultural development throughout the republic.The atlas consists of two volumes. The first volume brings together extensive and multifaceted information on the republic's natural conditions and natural resources. Its structure is based on a general classification of the fundamental components of the natural environment, with special emphasis on natural resources of major economic significance and on natural features requiring protection and conservation.The second volume comprises socio-economic maps depicting the republic's population and the level of development of industry, agriculture, transportation, education, public health, science, and culture. It also includes historical maps illustrating the past development of Kazakhstan. Together, these maps provide a comprehensive picture of the natural, economic, and social development of Kazakhstan.
