%X This book is intended to acquaint readers with the activities of the Tien Shan Physical Geography Station. The monograph consists of two parts. The first part provides an overview of the Station’s scientific research activities, while the second part is a bibliographic index. The overwhelming majority of the abstracts (97%) were prepared by the author himself, although some were taken from abstract journals or from the glaciological bibliographic index compiled by V. M. Kotlyakov. All abstracts have been edited, and some have been supplemented or abridged. A number of abstracts were kindly provided by the authors of the original publications (N. A. Gvozdetsky, Z. A. Ryazantseva, and E. A. Doroganevskaya), but these too were revised editorially. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically, while the works of each author are listed in chronological order. To facilitate the use of the materials included, supplementary indexes are provided: an author index, a subject index, and a geographical-name index. When a particular work was published more than once, an abstract was prepared only for the version presenting the material in the clearest and most complete form. Other publications containing substantially similar material are supplied with a “see” reference and the corresponding abstract number.Throughout the preparation of this work, the author continually benefited from the enthusiastic support of his colleagues at the Station. He is particularly grateful to M. I. Iveronova, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, for providing a bibliography of articles published by Station personnel during the early years of its activity, and to R. D. Zabirov, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, for editing the monograph and supplying photographic materials.The author is fully aware that this book is not without shortcomings and will gratefully accept all comments and corrections.
