            "title": "Comprehensive and thematic mapping issues in Uzbekistan",
            "ds_abstract": "During the Soviet era, the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic became a republic with a highly developed industrial sector and intensive agricultural production. The rapid growth of the economy and culture required systematic and active research into natural conditions and resources, territorial production complexes, and their individual components. One form of the scientific analysis and synthesis of such research is integrated mapping of the various components of nature, the economy, and the population. This is a special method of providing a comprehensive and multifaceted representation of reality through the preparation of individual maps, map series, and atlases (both general geographic and thematic) for territories of different scales, including countries, union republics, provinces, and administrative districts. Such maps, series, and atlases constitute a unified and mutually complementary system of cartographic works (K. A. Salishchev).\r\n\r\nThe tasks set forth in a number of resolutions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union concerning the rational distribution of productive forces, the utilization of natural resources, and the further development of the national economy determined the principal objective of integrated mapping in the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic: the preparation of thematic maps and comprehensive atlases covering all sectors of the national economy.\r\n\r\nAt congresses of the All-Union Geographical Society, as well as at All-Union and regional scientific and production conferences on cartography, emphasis was placed on the importance of integrated mapping methods for representing various aspects of nature and society, and on the necessity of theoretical generalization and methodological work concerning integrated mapping.\r\n\r\nAt the Second Congress of the All-Union Cartographic Society in 1947, it was noted that integrated mapping could develop along three principal directions:\r\n\r\nThe compilation of integrated maps linking different categories of phenomena and reflecting their interrelationships and mutual dependencies;\r\nThe preparation of geographic atlases providing a comprehensive and multidimensional representation of the mapped region;\r\nThe creation of sectoral maps based on a common concept and designed to complement one another (K. A. Salishchev).\r\n\r\nThanks to the theoretical and methodological research conducted by cartographers at Moscow State University in the field of integrated geographic mapping, numerous valuable regional integrated atlases and various maps of different parts of the Soviet Union, including university map series, were produced.\r\n\r\nThe practical experience gained in compiling integrated atlases has been summarized in numerous standard outlines, individual articles, methodological guides, and cartographic monographs. The achievements of Soviet scientists in atlas cartography exerted a significant influence on the development of thematic cartography abroad (Salishchev, 1982).\r\n\r\nIntegrated geographic atlases are of great importance, but the objectives of integrated mapping are not limited to them. Small-scale integrated atlases primarily serve as reference tools and are insufficient for the detailed study of individual phenomena, which is essential for solving many scientific and practical problems. Therefore, it is necessary to create a series of large-scale thematic maps whose content is coordinated and suitable for joint use.\r\n\r\nAs a rule, integrated maps, that is, specialized “regional” maps, are prepared during field geographic investigations aimed at solving specific practical problems. Such studies were conducted to substantiate plans for water supply and irrigation in the Surkhan-Sherabad Valley, the Karshi Steppe, and the Aral Sea region. As a result, a series of maps covering twenty different themes was produced and subsequently applied in planning and design work.\r\n\r\nThe present study takes into account the theoretical contributions of K. A. Salishchev, M. I. Nikishov, A. I. Preobrazhensky, and others concerning the methodological problems of integrated and thematic cartography. The agricultural mapping component is based on materials prepared by A. P. Zolovsky, I. O. Levitsky, V. D. Shoshky, and other specialists.\r\n\r\nIn the course of research on integrated and thematic cartography, the author, together with colleagues from the Department of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic and the Department of Surveying and Cartography of Tashkent State University, prepared more than fifty maps and edited more than three hundred under his supervision. Materials from the First Scientific and Practical Conference on “Problems of Integrated and Thematic Mapping of Uzbekistan,” held in December 1983, as well as cartographic collections published by the Department of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, were utilized in this work.\r\n\r\nThe principal materials used in preparing this monograph were general geographic maps and atlases published in the country, together with cartographic materials compiled by the Department of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic.\r\n\r\nThe author received substantial assistance from colleagues in the Department of Geography in collecting, processing, and compiling the cartographic materials. Z. M. Akramov and A. Eganberdiev provided valuable comments during the preparation of the monograph. The author extends sincere gratitude to all of them.",
