            "title": "Siberian Geography Collection, Volume 9",
            "ds_abstract": "The major tasks set for Soviet science by the 24th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union inspired Siberian geographers to study the natural and economic characteristics of the eastern regions of our country. The development of these regions constitutes an important component of the overall task of building the material and technical foundation of communism in the Soviet Union. In recent years, the attention of both scientists and practitioners has been focused on the southern part of Krasnoyarsk Krai. In accordance with the directives of the 24th Congress of the CPSU concerning the Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Soviet National Economy in 1971-1975, a large territorial production complex is planned here, based on the inexpensive hydroelectric power of the Yenisei River and local raw material resources. The Sayan Hydroelectric Power Station, already under construction and designed with an installed capacity of 6.4 million kilowatts, will become the largest hydroelectric station in the world. The resolutions of the 24th Congress of the CPSU also provide for the construction in southern Krasnoyarsk Krai of aluminum and vehicle manufacturing plants, a large steel foundry, nonferrous metal processing enterprises, as well as electrical engineering, light-industry, and food-industry enterprises. The region's favorable climate and fertile soils create conditions for the development of diversified agriculture.\r\n\r\nIn view of these prospects, the study of the natural characteristics of the Minusinsk Basin is of great importance. Without an understanding of the natural environment, rational national economic development is impossible. The study of the landscape and geomorphological conditions of the Minusinsk Basin completed by S. P. Alt is valuable not only from a scientific standpoint but also from a practical one, since it provides insight into a region where extensive economic development will take place in the coming years. The maps he compiled can be used in preparing plans for the further development of agriculture and the reclamation of new lands, as well as for assessing the productive potential of land resources.\r\n\r\nFrom the standpoint of long-term development, the West Siberian Lowland is also an important region, where a large national economic complex based on the utilization of oil, natural gas, and timber resources is being established. Transportation plays a crucial role in solving the basic economic problems of this complex, and this includes not only railways and highways but also waterways. In assessing the advantages of water transport in the West Siberian Lowland, it is important to examine the role of river flow in the formation and transformation of river channels and banks, as well as in channel migration processes. In his research, I. B. Petrov focused on the geomorphological effects of the lower reaches of the Irtysh River. Over the past 300 years, the river's channel has changed many times, shifting by as much as 1.7 kilometers in certain locations. Reliable data on slope development near rivers and channel processes are required for planning and implementing transportation projects, hydraulic engineering works, industrial facilities, and residential settlements. It is necessary not only to understand processes that have already occurred but also to forecast their development in the foreseeable future. In addressing these issues, the author seeks to reveal the diverse relationships between the manifestations of channel processes and the factors that determine them, as well as to identify and describe various types of channel processes.\r\n\r\nSiberia will continue to be one of the Soviet Union's most important regions rich in mineral resources. Because numerous deposits are widely distributed and differ significantly in reserve size and ore grade, the development of sound methods for the national economic evaluation of mineral resources is of great importance. Scholars from various disciplines are studying this issue and have achieved certain results, but a complete and definitive solution remains far off. In the article “Experience in the Economic-Geographical Evaluation of Mineral Resources,” I. L. Savelyeva attempts to develop her own approach to addressing this important national economic problem. Her method is based on the costs and capital investments incurred by a standard enterprise using comparable raw materials, while also introducing correction coefficients that reflect the regional characteristics of the resource being evaluated in its utilization within the national economy.\r\n\r\nAlthough large-scale industry in the eastern regions has long occupied a leading position, Siberia will continue to play the role of an important agricultural region both at present and in the foreseeable future. Since the conditions and directions of economic development depend on local natural and economic characteristics, the study of agricultural issues is important not only from a sectoral perspective but also from a regional one. This line of research among Siberian geographers is represented by the work of B. M. Ishmuratov, who examined the regional characteristics of agricultural development using Irkutsk Oblast as an example. Based on patterns of land use, he identified differences in crop distribution, the territorial organization of agriculture, labor equipment levels, and, consequently, regional variations in agricultural profitability and specialization. This work points the way toward agricultural development under the conditions of Eastern Siberia.\r\n\r\nOverall, this collection reflects the breadth and diversity of the research interests of Siberian geographers, as well as the practical and theoretical significance of their work. Geographical research should serve as a foundation for the formulation of development plans for the eastern regions. The editorial board hopes that the publication of this collection will contribute to the solution of this common task.",
