本书是一部以苏联雪被为研究对象的论文集，顺应国民经济全面发展要求最充分、最有效利用自然资源的时代背景。雪被是一种重要却尚未得到充分研究和利用的自然资源，对包括在很大程度上决定农作物产量的土壤水热状况在内的各种自然过程影响显著；而雪的物理机械性质时空变异性极强，要在农业中利用雪被、开展水文计算与预报并组织防雪灾，就有必要研究其动态的地理特征。文集所收材料着力刻画苏联一系列地区雪层的动态特征，分析其对地貌、水文过程及植被覆盖的影响，把雪视为与自然环境其他要素密切联系、构成景观的一个组成部分；还首次收录了全球陆地雪被示意图以及若干关于南极雪迁移的新资料，后者虽不涉及苏联领土，却具有重大科学意义。文集附有1955—1958年关于雪与雪被的文献索引，是对刊于《雪与融水，其研究与利用》（苏联科学院出版社，1956年）中1950—1954年同类索引的延续。
